How to Install the PIA VPN App on Amazon Fire Stick and Fire TV

The PIA app is available through the Amazon Appstore on Fire Stick and Fire TV models running Fire OS 6 and above, or you can install it manually using the Downloader app. Follow the steps below to find, download, and install the PIA app on your device. 

Note: PIA VPN is not currently compatible with Amazon’s Vega OS.

Install PIA Through the Amazon Appstore

  1. On your Fire Stick, navigate to the Find tab.

  2. Search for Private Internet Access. 
  3. Click VPN by Private Internet Access.VPN by Private Internet Access listed on the Fire TV app store
  4. Click the Download icon.Save icon on Private Internet Access's download page, letting you download it to Fire TV
  5. PIA should open automatically when the download completes. 
  6. Log in with your username and password.
  7. Click OK when asked about PIA’s permissions.

You’re now ready to sign in and start using PIA VPN on your Fire Stick. 

Install PIA Using the Downloader App

If you can’t see PIA on the Amazon Appstore or if you’d rather install it manually, you can do so using the Downloader app.

Note: This setup method requires a third-party application. Install and use third-party software at your own discretion, and remove the application once you have finished setting up PIA VPN if you no longer need it. 

  1. Navigate to the Find tab.

  2. Search for Downloader.

  3. Select Downloader.

  4. Click the Download button to install Downloader.

  5. Downloader will open automatically when the download is complete. Click Allow when it asks to access photos, media, and files on your device.

  6. Exit out of Downloader.

  7. From the Main Menu, select Settings.

  8. Select Device & Software.

  9. Select Developer Options.

Note: If you don’t see Developer Options, it may not be enabled. You can enable it by navigating to About in Device & Software and pressing the select button on your remote 7 times. 

  1. Select Install unknown apps.

  2. Click Downloader. It should change to ON.

  3. Exit out of the Settings menu and open Downloader.

  4. In the text-entry box at the top of the screen, input www.privateinternetaccess.com/installer/download_installer_android

  5. PIA will download automatically. Click Install on the next screen.

  6. When the app has finished installing, click Open.

  7. You can now log in with your username and password and connect to a VPN server.

Sign Into Your PIA Account

To sign in to your PIA account, you’ll need your account username and password. If you don’t have these, check the email address you used to purchase your PIA subscription. Your username should start with p.

  1. Click either Accept or No Thanks when asked if you want to help improve our service. 

Note: If you click Accept, anonymous connection stats will be shared with us. These stats do not contain any personally identifiable information.

  1. Select Login.
  2. After a short delay, a text entry window will appear. If it doesn’t, select Enter your username. Enter your username, then select Next. You can also scan the QR code with your phone and use your phone’s keyboard to enter your username.
  3. Another text entry window will appear. Enter your password using your Fire TV remote or, if you scanned the QR code, your phone’s keyboard. Then select Next. 
  4. If you’ve entered the correct information, you can finish setting up PIA by following the next steps.

Finish the Initial Setup

The initial setup steps require two permissions before PIA can connect. 

  1. PIA will ask for permission to add a VPN configuration. Select OK. 
  2. When the connection request appears, select OK again. 

Connect to a VPN Server

PIA lets you connect to an optimal server, choose a specific country, or connect to a server marked as a favorite.

Use the Optimal Server

PIA’s Optimal Location setting automatically selects a suitable VPN server for the connection, so you don’t need to choose a location manually. 

  1. Click the red power button on the main screen. 
  2. Your optimal server will appear under Current VPN location, and the power button will turn green once you’ve successfully connected. 

Choose a Server in Another Location

If you want to pick a location manually, you can do so whether the VPN is connected or disconnected. 

Note: If you’re already connected to a server, the VPN will briefly disconnect to connect to a new location.

  1. From the main screen, click either Selected VPN Location or Current VPN Location, depending on whether or not you’re connected.
  2. You’ll be taken to the All tab by default. Here, you can pick any country you want PIA to connect to. You can also select the Favorite or Search tab on the left side of the screen to pick a favorite server or search for one of your choosing. 

Note: You can also use the Quick Connect menu on the PIA Dashboard to reconnect to a server you’ve previously selected. 

Save a Favorite Server

Saving a server as a favorite adds it to the Quick Connect menu on the PIA Dashboard and the Favorites tab on the PIA Location Selection screen.

  1. From the Location Selection screen, hover over the server you want to favorite.
  2. Long-press the middle button on your Fire TV remote. The heart next to the server location will turn red to show it's been added to your favorites. 

Note: If you want to connect to the server at the same time, you’ll need to select it again after adding it to your favorites. 

Disconnect from a Server

You can disconnect from a connected server with just one click.

  1. From the PIA Dashboard, highlight the green power button and click the middle button on your Fire TV remote.
  2. The currently connected server will disconnect, and you’ll be free to connect to another server location.

Manage Connection Options

PIA provides several options for customizing your VPN connection. It allows you to choose when it connects, which protocol it uses, how it handles network connections, and more.

PIA Connection Options

To adjust your connection options, access the settings menu.

  1. Click the Gear icon in the top right corner of the PIA app.

Note: You can access the Gear icon from both the PIA Dashboard and Location Selection screen.

  1. Click General Settings.
  2. Click General.
  3. Here, you can toggle whether PIA connects on system startup, when the app is launched, or when the app updates.

Choose Connection Protocol

PIA also supports different VPN protocols, which determine how your device connects to the VPN server. You can choose the protocol that best suits your connection needs. 

  1. From the General Settings menu, click Protocols.
  2. Click Protocol Selection to choose between OpenVPN or WireGuard. Select OK to confirm your selection.

Note: You can optionally toggle Small Packets to help improve VPN compatibility on certain routers and mobile networks.

Modify Network Options

PIA lets you adjust network settings, including DNS, port forwarding, and access to devices on your local network. 

  1. From the General Settings menu, click Networks.
    1. Tap DNS to choose between PIA and your system DNS resolver.
    2. You can also toggle Request Port Forwarding, which will allow incoming connections to your Fire TV over an external port.
    3. Toggle Allow LAN Traffic to allow traffic between Fire TV and your local network while connected to the VPN.

Enable PIA MACE

PIA MACE blocks domains associated with ads, trackers, and malware while the VPN is connected. 

  1. Click the Gear icon on the PIA Dashboard or Location Selection screen.
  2. Click General Settings. 
  3. Click Privacy.
  4. Toggle PIA Mace.

Set Up a Dedicated IP

A dedicated IP gives you a fixed IP address that only you can use each time you connect. 

  1. Select the Gear icon to open the PIA Settings menu.
  2. Select Dedicated IP.
  3. Click on the Dedicated IP field and enter your Dedicated IP token. Once done, follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Dedicated IP address.  

Note: If you don’t have a Dedicated IP token, you can purchase one from your Client Control 

Panel.

Choose Which Apps Use PIA

PIA lets you choose which apps use the VPN connection and which apps connect normally. 

  1. Select the Gear icon from the PIA Dashboard or Location Selection screen.
  2. Select Per App Settings.
  3. Search for an app you want to adjust settings for, or choose one from the list below the search field.
  4. Select the app, then choose whether its traffic uses the VPN or bypasses it.

View PIA App Information and Send Debug Logs to Support

The app information screen shows details about your PIA installation and includes an option to send debug logs to PIA support for troubleshooting. 

  1. Select the ? icon from the PIA Dashboard or Location Selection screen.
  2. The screen displays your app version and lets you choose whether to share anonymous connection data with PIA.
    1. Select About to view third-party content notices and PIA licensing information.
    2. Select Privacy Policy to view PIA’s privacy policy.
    3. Select Send Debug Log to send diagnostic information to PIA support. Note the provided ID if you do, so support can locate the logs if needed.

Remove PIA from Your Fire TV

You can uninstall PIA from your Fire TV if you no longer need the app or want to reinstall it. 

Sign Out of Your PIA Account

You can sign out of your PIA account from the app settings without uninstalling the app. 

  1. Press the Gear icon in the top-right corner of the PIA Dashboard or Location Selection screen.
  2. Press Account.
  3. Click Log Out.
  4. A confirmation window will appear. Click Log out again.
  5. PIA will return you to the login screen.

Note: The Account menu also shows your username and next renewal date. 

Uninstall the PIA App

Uninstalling PIA removes the app and its stored data from your Fire TV. 

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, navigate to the PIA app. 
  2. Press the hamburger button on your Fire TV remote.
  3. Click Offload to keep the app’s data but free up storage space on your Fire TV.
  4. Click Uninstall to completely remove PIA from your Fire TV.

Note: No matter what option you pick, you’ll need to confirm your selection.
