You can change DNS settings in the Private Internet Access (PIA) app from the Network settings menu. This may help you fix connection errors.
How to Change DNS Servers in the PIA App
- With the VPN disconnected, select the three vertical dots (⋮) in the PIA app and select Settings.
- Select the Network tab and locate the DNS section. Open the drop-down menu and select your preferred DNS option:
- PIA DNS (default).
- Built-in Resolver
- Handshake DNS
- Use Existing DNS
- Custom
- Review your selection and return to the main screen.
Important: If you use Existing DNS Settings, Custom DNS Settings, or Handshake DNS, some DNS traffic may route outside PIA’s network. This may expose DNS traffic to third parties.
