During ongoing improvements to the PIA network, some users may have noticed their VPN IP address changing more frequently than usual. This behavior was temporary and has been resolved; you should receive an IP when you connect to the VPN server and only get a different one the next time the app reconnects. To make sure you have the latest updates, please update your PIA app to the latest version.
If you are still having issues related to changing IP addresses, this guide answers some common questions and troubleshoots potential issues.
Does This Affect My Privacy?
No. Your privacy and security remain protected. These IP address changes do not affect:
- Your encrypted VPN connection.
- PIA's no-logs policy.
- How your data is handled or protected.
You can learn more about how your data is handled in PIA VPN’s privacy policy.
Does This Affect Websites or Apps?
In some cases, changing IP addresses may cause certain websites or services to:
- Ask you to sign in again.
- Display additional verification or CAPTCHA prompts.
- Treat your connection as if it's coming from a new location.
Troubleshooting
If frequent IP changes are interrupting your browsing or causing other issues, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue.
Before you start, please check that you are using the latest version of the PIA app, which we recommend to get the best experience from our recent network improvements. You can find the latest updates via our download page.
If the issue persists, try the recommended troubleshooting steps based on your issue:
- Frequent CAPTCHA or Verification Prompts
- Incorrect Location or Local Search Results
- Slow Speeds or Reduced Performance
Frequent CAPTCHA or Verification Prompts
Some websites display CAPTCHAs when they detect high volumes of traffic from a shared IP address. This can happen because many PIA users can share the same VPN exit IP, which is a common behavior across many VPN providers to protect user privacy.
We're continually improving how traffic is routed and distributed across the PIA network. While these updates may improve your experience in some cases, whether a CAPTCHA is displayed is ultimately determined by the website you're visiting.
If you're seeing frequent verification prompts:
- Check whether the issue occurs on just one website or across multiple websites.
- Try connecting to a different VPN server location.
- If the issue is limited to a single website, try another server in the same country or a nearby location.
If CAPTCHAs continue across multiple websites, please contact customer support and let us know:
- The VPN location you're connected to
- The website(s) where you're seeing CAPTCHAs
- Whether the issue occurs on one website or across multiple websites
Incorrect Location or Local Search Results
Websites and search engines use IP location information to determine which local results to display. In some cases, this information may not update immediately, which can result in content being shown for a different region.
As part of our ongoing network improvements, we've updated location data for selected VPN servers to improve regional accuracy where supported. These updates are being deployed in stages, so availability may vary by VPN location.
If a website is showing the wrong region:
- Open the website in a private or incognito browser window. This lets you check whether previously stored browser data is affecting the results without clearing your existing cookies or signed-in sessions.
- Try reconnecting to the VPN or selecting another server in the same country, if available.
If the issue continues, our support team can help. Please let us know:
- The VPN location you're connected to.
- The website or service showing the incorrect location.
- The region it's displaying instead of the expected one.
Slow Speeds or Reduced Performance
As parts of the network are upgraded, some VPN locations may perform differently while they're transitioned to the new infrastructure. These improvements are designed to optimize traffic routing, increase network capacity, and improve overall connection reliability.
To help ensure the best performance:
- Connect to a different VPN location, ideally one closer to your physical location.
- Disconnect and reconnect to the VPN, or restart the PIA app.
If performance doesn't improve, please contact PIA Support with:
- The VPN location(s) you're using.
- Your device and operating system.
- The VPN protocol you're using (WireGuard or OpenVPN).
- Speed test results with and without the VPN connected.
- Whether the issue occurs on all VPN locations or only specific ones.
