If you experience high ping or latency when using the PIA app, the issue may relate to the size of data passing through the connection. This occurs because each network interface uses an MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) value that defines the largest packet size allowed. If the data being sent is too large, latency issues may occur, for example, with torrents.
The Use Small Packets option in the PIA app settings reduces the maximum packet size sent over the connection by making the VPN tunnel report a smaller MTU value than it actually has. As a result, applications send smaller packets, which can improve performance when data is difficult to compress.
If you experience very slow speeds or intermittent disconnections, enabling this option may improve connection stability. Follow the steps below to enable it.
Note: This option does not resolve latency caused by long distances between your location and the VPN server.
Windows/Linux/macOS:
- Open the PIA Client, then go to Settings.
- Go to the "Protocols" tab.
- Underneath the Configuration Method box, check the "Use Small Packets" box.
Android and iOS:
- Open the PIA Client app.
- Go to Settings -> Protocols.
- Enable the "Use Small Packets" option.
