During installation of the PIA app on macOS, you may encounter Error -1712. This is a timeout error. It occurs when the installer cannot complete a required task within the expected time. This issue often relates to macOS disk permissions in Disk Utility.
Disk Utility manages internal and external storage devices. It also organizes data, creates disk images, combines disks into RAID sets, and checks for and repairs disk and volume errors.
Disk Permissions
Follow these steps to repair disk permissions:
Step 1: Open Utilities
- Open Finder and go to Applications > Utilities.
Step 2: Open Disk Utility
In the Utilities folder, select and open Disk Utility.
Step 3: Run First Aid
Select Macintosh HD, then select First Aid.
Step 4: Repair the Disk
Select Run to begin the repair process.
Step 5: Restart Your Mac
After the process completes, shut down your Mac. Wait 1 minute, then turn it back on.
Step 6: Reinstall the PIA App
Delete the existing installer from your Downloads folder. Download a fresh copy from the PIA website, then run the installation again.
Corrupt Admin Permissions
If the issue persists, corrupted administrator permissions may cause the error. The PIA app requires administrator access to install correctly and apply required system changes.
To test this issue, create a new administrator account on your Mac and attempt the installation again. If the installation succeeds, the issue is related to the original user account permissions.
If this is the case, contact Apple Support for assistance with account permissions. You can also migrate your settings to the new administrator account and continue using it. For instructions on how to create a new admin profile, please review this article here.
