Smart DNS provides an easy way to use compatible online services on a smart TV, without routing the TV's traffic through a VPN. Unlike a VPN, Smart DNS does not change the device's IP address or encrypt its internet connection.
Note: Some smart TVs can install the PIA app directly from their built-in app store. This is often simpler to set up than Smart DNS, and it gives full VPN protection, including encryption.
Generate Your Smart DNS Address
The PIA control panel is where you request a Smart DNS address for your device. Sign in there first, then work through the steps below.
-
Select Smart DNS in the sidebar.
-
Open the Select Device menu, choose Other Smart TVs, then click Select.
-
Open the Select Location menu, choose your country, then click Select.
-
Note the Smart DNS address shown on screen.
Configure Smart DNS on Your TV
Menu names vary by TV brand, but most smart TVs let DNS be entered directly in the network settings.
- Open the TV's network or Wi-Fi settings.
- Locate the DNS setting, and switch it from automatic to manual.
- Enter the Smart DNS address noted earlier, and leave any secondary DNS field blank.
- Save the changes, then restart the TV.
