If you're having trouble connecting to the VPN or your connection frequently drops, changing the OpenVPN port may help. Some networks restrict or block specific ports, and selecting a different one can improve connectivity.
Note: Port selection is available when using the OpenVPN protocol. If you're using WireGuard, these settings aren’t applicable.
Change the OpenVPN Port
- Open the PIA app.
- Click the three dots icon and select Settings.
- Open the Protocols tab.
- Ensure OpenVPN is selected as your VPN protocol.
Try a Different UDP Port
- Return to the Protocols menu in Settings. Under Transport, select UDP.
- Open the Remote Port dropdown menu and select a different port.
- Close the window and connect to a VPN server.
If the connection issue persists, try another available UDP port.
Try TCP Instead
If changing UDP ports doesn't resolve the issue:
- Go back to Settings > Protocol. Change Transport from UDP to TCP.
- Select a different Remote Port from the dropdown menu.
- Close the window and connect to a VPN server.
You can repeat these steps and try different port combinations until you find one that works reliably on your network.
If changing ports doesn't resolve the problem, the issue may be related to your network configuration, firewall, antivirus software, or ISP restrictions. Consider switching to the WireGuard protocol or contact PIA Support for additional troubleshooting assistance.
