If you're seeing an error related to the PIA network adapter during installation or while using the app, the steps below can help resolve the issue.
Note: This guide applies to issues with the OpenVPN network adapter. If you're using WireGuard, these steps are generally not required.
Reinstall the Network Adapter from the PIA App
If you see the message “The virtual network adapter is not installed” when connecting to the VPN:
- Open the PIA app and click the three dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Click on the Help tab.
- Select Reinstall TAP Adapter.
Note: If Windows displays a User Account Control (UAC) prompt asking for permission to make changes to your device. Click Yes to continue.
- Once the adapter has been reinstalled, try connecting again.
Switch to WireGuard
If the issue persists, try switching to WireGuard.
- Open the PIA app and click the three dots in the top-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Select the Protocols tab.
- Select WireGuard as your connection protocol.
- Close the window and attempt to connect again.
Advanced Troubleshooting
If the steps above didn't resolve the issue, try following the advanced troubleshooting steps below.
- Open the Start menu and select Settings.
- Navigate to System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- If prompted, select Restart now.
- After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- When the Startup Settings screen appears, press 5 or F5 to enable Safe Mode with Networking.
Uninstall the TAP Adapter
Once booted into Safe Mode with Networking, do the following to remove the PIA network adapter:
- Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc into the field, then select OK.
- In the Device Manager window, expand the Network adapters section.
- Locate Private Internet Access Network Adapter or PIA Tunnel.
- Right-click the adapter and select Uninstall device.
- If prompted, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device and click Uninstall.
If you don't see the adapter listed, check the Other devices or Unknown devices sections. If no PIA or TAP adapter is present, you can proceed directly to reinstalling the adapter.
Reinstall the Adapter
- Press Windows + R, type cmd into the field, then select OK.
- In the Command Prompt window, type the following:
"C:\Program Files\Private Internet Access\pia-service.exe" tap reinstall
- Press Enter to execute the command.
Restart Your Computer
After reinstalling the adapter, completely shut down your computer and wait approximately 30 seconds before turning it back on. Once Windows has restarted, launch PIA and verify that the issue has been resolved.
