Windows - Changing DNS Servers in the PIA App

The PIA app allows you to choose which DNS servers are used while connected to the VPN. By default, PIA uses its own private DNS servers, but you can select a different option if needed. 
 

Note: Using DNS servers other than PIA DNS may expose your DNS requests to third parties, depending on the provider you choose. 

Change Your DNS Settings

  1. Open the PIA app and click the three dots icon.

  1. Select Settings.

  1. Open the Network tab.

  1. Locate the DNS setting and select your preferred DNS option from the dropdown menu.

Available options include:

  • PIA DNS (recommended): Uses PIA’s private DNS servers.
  • Built-in Resolver: Uses the DNS resolver built into the PIA app.
  • Existing DNS: Keeps using the DNS servers already configured on your device.
  • Handshake DNS: Uses Handshake-based DNS resolution.
  • Custom DNS: Lets you enter your own DNS server addresses.

Reconnect to the VPN

After changing your DNS settings, reconnect to the VPN for the new configuration to take effect. If you experience connectivity or DNS-related issues after making changes, switch back to PIA DNS and test the connection again.
