Use this guide if you cannot install or open the PIA VPN app. These steps can also help if the app crashes, does not load correctly, becomes unresponsive, or gets stuck while disconnecting.
Try the troubleshooting steps below in order. After each step, check if the issue is fixed. If it is, you can skip the remaining steps.

Check Your Security Software
Antivirus, firewall, or other security software can sometimes block files that PIA VPN needs to install or work correctly.
To prevent interference between your security software and the PIA VPN app, follow these steps:
- Open your security software.
- Add the PIA VPN app to the software’s allowlist or exclusions list. For platform-specific instructions and the files you need to exclude, see how to add antivirus exclusions.
- Try to install or open the PIA VPN app again.
If the issue continues, proceed to the next step.
Uninstall and Reinstall PIA VPN
Reinstall the PIA VPN app to replace any damaged or incomplete app files that may be causing the issue. Follow the instructions for your device below, then check if the PIA VPN app installs and opens correctly.
Windows
- Disconnect from the VPN.
- In the PIA app, click the three-dot menu icon and click Settings.
- Click Uninstall Private Internet Access (at the bottom of the page).
- Windows will prompt you to proceed with the uninstallation. Select Yes to confirm.
- Temporarily disable any antivirus software or firewalls that could be blocking the PIA VPN app.
- Download the latest version of the PIA VPN Windows app (available in your Client Control Panel).
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the instructions to install the app on Windows.
macOS
- Disconnect from the VPN.
- In the PIA app, click the three-dot menu icon and click Settings.
- Click Uninstall Private Internet Access (at the bottom of the page).
- Enter your administrator username and password if prompted, and click Install Helper.
- Download the latest version of the PIA VPN macOS app (available in your Client Control Panel).
- Follow the instructions to install the app on macOS.
iOS
- Touch and hold the PIA VPN app on the home screen.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App.
- Tap Delete to confirm.
- Open the App Store and search for PIA VPN.
- Tap the download icon to install the app on iOS.
Android
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & devices.
- Tap Manage.
- Find and select the PIA VPN app. Tap Uninstall.
- Search for PIA VPN in the Google Play Store.
- Tap Install to install the app on Android.
Linux
- Disconnect from the VPN.
- In the PIA app, click the three-dot menu icon and click Settings.
- Click Uninstall Private Internet Access (at the bottom of the page).
- Follow the prompts to complete the uninstall.
- Download the latest version of the PIA VPN app for Linux (available in your Client Control Panel).
- Follow the instructions to install the app on Linux.
Note: If you have any issues uninstalling the app using the steps above, you can also follow these steps to manually uninstall the app on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
After reinstalling the app, open PIA VPN and check if the issue is fixed. If not, continue to the next step.
Install Pending Windows updates
If you are using Windows, pending system updates may affect the PIA VPN app. Check for and install any available updates:
- Click Start > Settings.
- Click Update & Security.
- Check for available Windows updates and install them.
- Restart your device if prompted.
- Open the PIA VPN app and check if the issue is fixed.
If there are no pending updates or the issue continues after installing them, continue to the next step.
Install PIA VPN in Safe Mode
If you still cannot install the PIA VPN app on Windows or macOS, try installing it in Safe Mode. This can help if security software or another program is interfering with the installation.
