The Private Internet Access (PIA) desktop application includes a network automation feature that allows you to configure PIA to connect or disconnect the VPN automatically when specific conditions are met. You can find network automation within the application settings.
The feature allows you to establish rules for various network types. Once the VPN detects a connection to a specific network type, it executes the assigned rule.
Supported Network Types
You can configure rules for the following connections:
Protected Wi-Fi: These are private, encrypted networks that require a password.
Open Wi-Fi: These are public, unencrypted networks open to everyone.
Wired Connection: This applies to any ethernet or hardwired network.
Currently Connected Network: This allows you to set a rule for the specific network you are using at that moment.
Managing Automation Rules
Once you choose a network, select a rule to either Connect or Disconnect when PIA detects that connection.
When you connect to a network with an active Connect rule, the dashboard displays the rule status above the Power button.
Rule Hierarchy and Constraints
Specific vs. General: Rules for specific SSIDs take priority over generic network rules. For example, if you set a specific SSID to Connect but the general Protected Wi-Fi category to Disconnect, PIA follows the specific SSID rule.
Duplicate Rules: You cannot create duplicate rules. The interface marks existing rules with "Rule Exists" when you attempt to add a new one.
New Networks: Changing Wi-Fi networks provides the opportunity to create a unique rule for the new connection.
