Protocols control how the Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN creates and protects the encrypted tunnel between your device and our VPN servers. They differ in how they authenticate the server and maintain the connection, and some networks may work better with one over another.
If you experience connection issues with PIA VPN, changing your settings can help rule out a protocol-specific issue. For more information about why a VPN connection might drop, read about VPN ports and transport layers.
How to Switch to a Different PIA VPN Protocol
PIA VPN lets you switch between WireGuard and OpenVPN in the Android app. Here’s how:
- Tap the menu button (☰).
- Go to Settings > Protocols.
- Tap Protocol Selection and choose either WireGuard or OpenVPN.
WireGuard is typically selected by default and is the best option for everyday use due to its speed and low battery drain.
OpenVPN can help if you need additional troubleshooting options. It also enables settings for choosing different transport layer protocols and ports.
