If you experience issues connecting or staying connected to Private Internet Access (PIA) servers, try using a different port or protocol. For information regarding why a connection might drop, please review this article.
Ensure you connect using the OpenVPN protocol rather than IPsec. To check this, open the app settings by tapping the three lines in the top-left corner, tap Settings, and select Protocol. From there, select OpenVPN.
Step 1: Open Application
Open the iOS app and tap the menu button in the top-left corner.
Step 2: Settings
Within the main menu, tap Settings.
Step 3: Protocols
From the application settings menu, tap the Protocols tab located under the General tab.
Step 4: Select OpenVPN
Select OpenVPN if it is not already selected.
Step 5: Change Transport to UDP
Select the Transport option and select UDP.
Step 6: Change Ports
Once you select the transport type, select Remote Port. Cycle through the list of ports and connect through each one until you find a connection that works.
Step 7: Change Sockets - TCP
If you are unable to connect after testing all UDP ports, return to the application settings and change the transport type to TCP.
Step 8: Change Ports
Once you select TCP, select Remote Port and cycle through the list of TCP ports until you find a connection that works.
Step 9: Connect
Once you change the ports and connection type, return to the main menu and try connecting to the VPN again. If you connect successfully, you see Connected below the power button.
