Private Internet Access (PIA) recommends the default application settings for most users. However, you may need to adjust specific settings to resolve connection issues or increase security.
To access the settings, open the app and tap the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner, then tap Settings.
VPN Settings
General
Launch on System Startup: Starts the app and initiates a connection once you turn on your phone.
Connect on Launch: Connects the VPN automatically after you open the application.
Connect on app update: Connects the VPN immediately after the application updates.
Dark Theme: Changes the app interface to a dark gray background.
Haptic Feedback: Causes the device to vibrate to notify you of connectivity.
Widget Settings: Opens a section to adjust the appearance of PIA widgets.
Show Service Communication Messages: Enables the display of in-app messages.
Show Geo-located Regions: Includes geo-located server options in the server selection list.
Reset Settings to Default: Returns all settings to their original configuration.
Protocols
Protocol Selection: Allows you to switch between OpenVPN and WireGuard.
Transport: Allows you to switch between TCP and UDP.
Data Encryption: Specifies the encryption level, either 128-bit AES or 256-bit AES.
Remote Port: Specifies the external port used for traffic; available ports include UDP 8080, 853, 123, and 53, or TCP 80, 443, 853, and 8443.
Local Port: Specifies the port used for internal communication; this only requires adjustment in specific scenarios.
Use Small Packets: Reduces the IP packet size to help resolve specific connectivity issues.
Handshake: Specifies the certificate used to establish a connection with the VPN server.
Network
DNS: Specifies the DNS servers used with the VPN; you can select Custom DNS to change these from the PIA defaults.
Request Port Forwarding: Allows incoming connections to your mobile device via an external port, which is recommended for torrenting.
Aggressive IPv6 Blocking: Protects against leaks by blocking IPv6 traffic, as PIA operates exclusively on IPv4.
Allow LAN Traffic: Allows access to local network devices; this is not suggested on public networks.
Privacy
VPN kill switch: Prevents internet traffic if the VPN disconnects. This feature integrates with the Android 8.0+ system kill switch to block connections when the VPN is inactive.
PIA MACE (APK only): Enforces the use of MACE to block ads, malware, and trackers.
Automation, Obfuscation, and Help
- Automation: Keeps the VPN connected unless you use a network listed as "Trusted".
- Connect via Proxy: Allows you to route specific apps through the PIA proxy.
- Version - This lists the version of the application currently installed on your device.
View VPN Debug Log: Displays the connection debug log for troubleshooting.
Send Debug Information to Support: Generates a log ID for submission to the support team.
Help improve PIA: Shares anonymous connection statistics to help improve the service.
Latest news: Displays updates regarding the app and PIA.
