After you successfully connect to a Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN server, the PIA app should show a green Connected status. The app should also display both your public and VPN IP addresses, which helps confirm that your traffic is routing through the VPN.
You can also use external tests to check whether websites see your VPN IP address instead of your real one.
Checking for VPN Leaks and Connection Issues
Follow these steps to confirm that your VPN is working.
- Connect to your chosen VPN server in the PIA app.
- Visit PIA’s “What's My IP Address?” page. This page checks your current connection and displays your active IP address and approximate location.
- Check the result. If your connection is routing through PIA, you should see a green box that says “Protected.”
- Otherwise, the page will say, “Unprotected; You are not connected to PIA.”
If you’re encountering issues, your network settings, VPN port, or protocol may be affecting your connection. Check our guide on how to change ports to troubleshoot connection issues.
