Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your Private Internet Access (PIA) account. 2FA codes are sent via a mobile authentication app, so you need a smartphone or tablet to enable and use the 2FA system.
Enabling Two-Factor Authentication
To enable this feature, please follow the instructions below.
1. Log into the Client Control Panel via the PIA sign-in page.
2. Once logged in, select Account Settings.
3. Select the Enable option under Two-factor Authentication.
4. Enter your password to confirm, then click Enable Two Factor Authentication.
5. The system will generate a QR code box that will allow you to add this 2FA account to an authenticator app. Scan the QR code with your chosen authenticator app and follow the prompts to add your PIA account to the app. The app will then generate a numeric code, which you can enter into the box below the QR code. Then, click Confirm Two Factor Authentication.
Note: Avoid using a dark theme on your browser for this step, as some cameras might not be able to scan the QR code correctly.
6. Once you’ve confirmed your 2FA code, the system will provide a series of recovery codes in case your 2FA needs to be reset or disabled. Save these somewhere safe and select I have safely stored the codes. Our email system will then send an email alerting you that 2FA has been successfully enabled.
Disabling Two-Factor Authentication
If you choose to disable 2FA, you can do so from within the Client Control Panel.
- Go to Account Settings > Two-factor authentication and select Disable.
- Enter your account password and a 2FA or recovery code, then click Disable Two Factor Authentication.
Note: Please remember to delete your 2FA account code generator from within your authenticator app after doing this.
